Booking Through Thursday: Recommend

Somebody walks up to you and says, “I need a really good book to read–any genre. What do you recommend?”
What’s the first book off the top of your head?

As for me (at least for now), I’ll BTT: Recommend The Rosie Project by Graeme Simsion.

But then, the definition of ‘a really good book to read’ is so relative. Or subjective. Because, what’s good for one person might not apply the same for the other. A really good book could be the one with good plot, the one with distinctive character, the one with story that it’s reader can relate to.

Why would I recommend The Rosie Project by Graeme Simsion?

Well, it was because I really enjoyed this novel. When I read this book, I was so pleased by the story. Not to mention, prof. Don was so peculiar one could not easily forget him as a character. And by recommending this novel, I wish for this somebody a joy of reading.

What about you?

One more thing before I forgot, I think it should be like this. When somebody ask for your recommendation, you better ask them specifically. Because that question above was so vague. And when this somebody is a reader like you, they’ll repeat their question with more detail so it’d be clear enough to get your respond.

On the Radar | October 4th, 2015

I bet you’ve wondered where have I been all this time. May to September sure is a long hiatus. Blame the works and all the new daily activities that wear me out. Yes, I’ve lost my grip somewhere between.

But it has to end, no matter what. This book blog also need attention from me so here I am, bracing myself to write a post about two books on my radar for this week:

Paris For One by Jojo Moyes

These days, I barely reads (not to mention, book-blogging) so I figure I need books that has the potential to boost my reading activities. Of course my pick goes to Jojo Moyes works. Somehow I can always count on her books that’s why I hope it’s a good decision to make.

Wishful Wednesday #66

Hello, Wednesday! Hello, you!

I remember that it’s been a while that I take a note on this book. It was Josie who introduced me to it, not exactly her -because she’s just a fictional character that lead the story in Out of The Easy by Ruta Sepetys. This book was mentioned in the beginning part when a man (later a victim of murder) came to the bookstore where Josie work. Are you curious enough to know what exactly is the book I’m talking about? Well, here we go.

David Copperfield is the story of a young man’s adventures on his journey from an unhappy & impoverished childhood to the discovery of his vocation as a successful novelist. Among the gloriously vivid cast of characters he encounters are his tyrannical stepfather, Mr Murdstone; his formidable aunt, Betsey Trotwood; the eternally humble yet treacherous Uriah Heep; frivolous, enchanting Dora; and the magnificently impecunious Micawber, one of literature’s great comic creations.

In David Copperfield—the novel he described as his “favorite child”—Dickens drew revealingly on his own experiences to create one of his most exuberant & enduringly popular works, filled with tragedy & comedy in equal measure.

It was so like me to note some titles that comes from the novel I’m currently reading, taking a note that I will look into that title(s) later just to know what is it about. Like when I’m noting The General in His Labyrinth when I read Looking for Alaska and reading it the next time I have a copy of that title. And in this case, David Copperfield by Charled Dickes, I’ll make sure to have it tuck in my bookshelf and hope that it’ll come to me soon.

[Blog Tour + Giveaway] To All The Boys I’ve Loved Before

Lara Jean tak pernah mendapatkan surat cinta, tapi ia pernah membuatnya untuk beberapa cowok yang pernah disukainya. Surat yang tak pernah diniatkan untuk dikirimkan, cukup menjadi memento untuk dirinya sendiri. Tapi naas, karena ulah jail yang luput dari pengawasannya, surat-surat tersebut malah sampai ke tangan cowok-cowok yang pernah disukainya, antara lain Josh (cowok yang baru diputuskan Margot -kakak Lara Jean) dan Peter Kavinsky (atlet lacrosse yang tampan dan popular).

Menghadapi Peter, bukan hal yang sulit bagi Lara Jean, ia hanya perlu mengelak. Tapi Josh, lain cerita. Sejak lama Lara Jean menyimpan perasaan terhadap Josh, tapi ia tahu diri dan tak pernah menunjukkannya. Sampai ketika surat tersebut sampai ke tangan Josh, Lara Jean berusaha mati-matian menyangkal kebenarannya hingga ia akhirnya malah terjebak ke dalam permainan pacar pura-pura dengan Peter. Sebuah kepura-puraan yang menuntut banyak hal dari Lara Jean dan mengubah dunianya.

Well, well, kalau kalian pengikut setia blog ini, pasti tahu kalau saya pernah membuat review TATBILB sebelumnya. Saat itu saya membaca versi bahasa inggrisnya. Jadi, bisa dikata kali ini saya re-read. Nevermind though, I get to meet Peter Kavinsky again. Yeay! *fangirl alert

TATILB yang diterjemahkan oleh Penerbit Spring ini, enak dibacanya. Berhasil membuat saya menghabiskannya dalam satu malam -saking lancarnya saya menyatu dengan cerita Lara Jean. Sedangkan secara cerita, saya suka bahwa novel ini adalah novel Young Adult yang sepertinya ringan, namun didalamnya ada konflik internal remaja cewek, sister-bond (Song sisters) dan kemandirian mereka dalam keluarga kecil yang telah ditinggalkan sosok Ibu. Fluffy reads, makes you swoon over the male characters and sometimes gave you heart-thumping experience because the story is just so sweet ❤

Kurasa sekarang aku tahu perbedaannya, antara mencintai seseorang dari kejauhan dengan mencintai seseorang dari dekat. Ketika kau melihat mereka dari dekat, kau melihat diri mereka yang sesungguhnya, dan mereka juga melihat dirimu yang sesungguhnya.

Wishful Wednesday #65

Hi, Wednesday! Hello, you! 🙂 Saya melewatkan beberapa minggu untuk Wishful Wednesday. Lebih karena sengaja, karena saya sedang tidak banyak punya wishlist. ^^/ Tapi minggu ini saya ngga mau ketinggalan, ada satu buku -kumpulan cerpen, yang memikat saya untuk memilikinya. Apalagi setelah baca review yang sangat bagus dari dek Elysa di sini.

“Kalian orang-orang tolol yang percaya kepada mimpi.” Mimpi itu memberitahunya bahwa ia akan memperoleh seorang kekasih. Dalam mimpinya, si kekasih tinggal di kota kecil bernama Pangandaran. Setiap sore, lelaki yang akan menjadi kekasihnya sering berlari di sepanjang pantai ditemani seekor anjing kampung. Ia bisa melihat dadanya yang telanjang, gelap dan basah oleh keringat, berkilauan memantulkan cahaya matahari. Setiap kali ia terbangun dari mimpi itu, ia selalu tersenyum. Jelas ia sudah jatuh cinta kepada lelaki itu.

Saya memang belum pernah baca buku-buku dari Eka Kurniawan. Tapi saya bisa menduga bahwa karyanya akan tergolong ke dalam sastra Indonesia yang biasanya sarat dengan penulisan yang lihai dan tema cerita yang tidak biasa (atau bahkan biasa namun dieksplor dengan istimewa sehingga hasilnya biasanya remarkable). Saya sudah sering melihat review buku-bukunya di blog orang lain, namun sampai saat ini belum pernah memutuskan untuk mencobanya sampai kemarin saya melihat review dari Elysa yang saya singgung di atas. Mungkin sudah saatnya saya ‘berkenalan’ dengan Eka Kurniawan. Semoga saya segera berjodoh dengan kumcernya ini. Aamiin.
